Where it all started...
The seeds for Redcurrent were unwittingly sown by two extraordinary women, Kit Acland and Betty Coltart. They were my grandmothers, two women of wonderful dignity, taste and style. Throughout our lives they influenced my mother and I deeply, imbuing us with a love of timeless beauty. I grew up surrounded by beautiful objects that were passed down through the generations and treated with respect and care. The homes of our extended families reflected a unique and eclectic style where old and new décor mixed seamlessly together projecting a look that was both curated and inviting.
It wasn't, however, until Audrey had raised five children and undertaken the daunting task of renovating a historical home in Havelock North that she saw an opportunity to share with the wider world her love of the unusual, the classic and the beautiful. In her early sixties she began bringing a few little treasures home from Bali and friends began to say; "I'd love some of that".
Each season we offer our take on the latest trends amongst the classic “always current” styles Redcurrent is known for such as our beautiful Pashminas and Travel Accessories. Either Audrey or I along with our in-house Buyer, Lucy Robins (who first started with us at age 18 as a sales assistant), travel the globe to source product and meet with our suppliers. Stock is sourced from India through to Italy and we prefer to deal directly with our suppliers to ensure we know exactly where our products have come from. 70% of our stock is exclusively made for Redcurrent with the remaining products sourced from carefully chosen and trusted brands such as Glasshouse Fragrances, Ecoya, MOR Modern Apothecary, Citta Design, Saben & Nature Baby.
To say this is a family business probably doesn't do justice to Redcurrent. The notion of family extends to an extraordinary wider family - our staff, suppliers and customers. A lot of Redcurrent's staff have worked with us for many years and we have suppliers who have been with us since the beginning. They and our nearly fifty thousand RedFriends throughout New Zealand are Redcurrent. We hope you will join us.
